Brad Thor Spices Things Up With His "Cliffhanger" to the Table

Because some of my relatives have no Code of Conduct, and as I don’t want to commit an Act of War, I have a Hidden Order for dealing with Thanksgiving—and it all revolves around the cocktails.

One of my favorites is a cinnamon spiced rum I call the “Cliffhanger” – because you never know how it’s going to end.

Ingredients (Serves 2):

  • 5 oz. Captain Morgan Original Spiced Rum (kick it up to 5 oz. if you have difficult relatives in town)
  • 12 oz. apple cider
  • 4 whole cloves
  • 1 allspice berry
  • 1⁄8 vanilla bean, split in half lengthwise
  • 2 tsp. fresh orange zest
  • 2 cinnamon sticks (for garnish)
  • 2 tbsp. cinnamon
  • 2 tbsp. sugar
  • Add apple cider to small sauce pan.  Combine vanilla bean, cloves, allspice berry, and orange zest into the cheese cloth, and tie for steeping.  Place cheese cloth into the sauce pan and slowly simmer.

Mix sugar and cinnamon, rim two glasses with mixture, and add 1.25 oz. of rum to each.  When the cider is hot, discard cheese cloth (or retain for another round), pour into glasses, garnish with cinnamon sticks and serve.  Enjoy!
